Apple's 'iPad Pro' Plans Reportedly on Hold

Apple has "shelved" its plans to produce a larger-sized tablet, according to a report from Digitimes. Nicknamed the "iPad Pro", the 12.9-inch tablet was rumored to be under development with a launch date possible early next year.

Apple's alleged move comes as these larger tablets face hurdles because the form factors are not compatible with the existing ecosystems, forcing manufacturers to scale back on their plans, claims Digitimes.
However, most of the large-size tablet projects face difficulties because of lack of support from related platform developers and ecosystems. Apple has also been said to shelved its large-size tablet project.

It is unclear whether Apple having "shelved" the iPad Pro is a permanent move or if the company is simply taking a wait-and-see attitude with the project for the time being.

Rumors of the iPad Pro first surfaced last May with a claimed early 2014 launch timeframe, but while a number of other sources have weighed in with their own claims about the device including word that production on the device's display had already begun, targets for the device's launch have slipped over time. Most recently, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has frequently offered accurate information on Apple's product plans, suggested last month that while the iPad Pro remained under development, its launch would likely not come this year.

As rumors of a larger iPad gained steam throughout the latter half of 2013, Samsung moved to introduce its own product with the launch of a 12.2-inch tablet early this year.

Digitimes has a mixed track record with its reporting, frequently obtaining accurate information from within Apple's supply chain, but on occasion seeming to misinterpret that information.

iPad Pro to Utilize 2K Resolution, Eye Tracking (Release Date, Specs Rumors)

A new report suggests Apple's upcoming 12.9-inch tablet, dubbed the 'iPad Pro,' could also pack improved resolution and eye tracking security technology.

Previous iPad Pro rumors suggested a display with 4K resolution, but the latest rumors point to that tech coming at a later date. Other reports suggest Apple will also ditch retina and instead increase resolution in the next line of iPads.

Another recent rumor suggests that Apple will release the 12.9-inch tablet, which they call the 'iPad Max,' in October.

Digitimes reports that the 12.9-inch iPad Max will release in the fall "targeting North America's educational market [and]... manufactured by Quanta Computer." The tablet would arrive as a competitor to Samsung's rumored 12 to 13-inch tablet and feature new cases with integrated keyboards and batteries, according to the report. The iPad Max will be best-suited for high school and college students that require a tablet that can 'do work,' Forbes reports.

To some analysts, the recent release of the iPad Air, which Apple chose instead of the anticipated 'iPad 5' title, was an early indicator that an iPad with the name 'Pro' would be unveiled in 2014.

According to Will Power, an analyst at RW Baird, the iPad Air will be followed by a high-end tablet called iPad Pro that will feature some of the work tasks only currently available on PCs.

"The name change is likely intentional. Everything that Apple articulates it does for a reason," says Power. "Developing an iPad that is better designed for productivity is something that could very well make sense."

History also indicates that the name change to iPad Air was more than a savvy way to market the fifth-generation iPad. Apple's laptop and notebook computer line features a slimmer MacBook Air and a heavier-duty MacBook Pro.

"This would seem to leave room for a 'Pro' model at some point if a market for a higher performance tablet exists," Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, wrote in a note Tuesday to investors.

Even the new 7.9-inch iPad Mini is a borrowed name; Apple also offers a small desktop computer called the Mac Mini.

Previous speculation suggested Apple could be preparing a larger, 13-inch iPad that would bring a bit more diversity to the company's tablet line. Ben Reitzes, an analyst at Barclays, recently echoed those previous reports in a note to investors.

With Apple's iPad sales at 170 million (with most being used for leisure rather than work), there is still plenty of room for the company to grow. According to Gartner estimates, 300 million PCs are expected to ship in 2013, compared to only about 180 million tablets. Adding a high-end tablet that could do everything a PC can could help Apple get the most of the tablet market.

"Put that 170 million number in the context of the number of PCs out there," Power said. "There's still a significant growth opportunity for tablets and Apple is trying to find ways to further segment the market."

A leaked  year-end memo from Apple CEO Tim Cook to the company's employees boasts 'big plan' for 2014.
Cook didn't go into specifics about what Apple has in store for the New Year, saying only that 'we think customers are going to love' the new products.
However, the Apple rumor mill offers a few clues on the company's likely offerings. These include the iWatch wearable computer, a 13-inch iPad Pro, an TV set and a redesigned iPhone, Business Insider reports.

Cook used most of the staff memo to pat the company on its back for its 2013 successes.
These include reaching 50billion App Store app downloads, the release of the new iPhone 5S and 5C and the introduction of American manufacturing for the Mac Pro - which will be made at a plant in Austin, Texas, instead of in China.
Cook saves the most titillating part for the end of his memo, which was obtained by Apple insider site 9to5Mac.com.

Business Insider, however, offers a roundup of Apple rumors that could shed some light on what the company has planned for 2014.
One unconfirmed report indicates that Apple plans to launch an 'iWatch' - a wearable computer. Samsung has already launched a similar product, the Galazy Gear SmartWatch, which works in concert with the Galaxy phone.
The company hired Paul Deneve, the former CEO of fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, to work on a secret project that reports directly to Cook. Widespread speculation is that he is working on the 'iWatch.'
An 'iPad Pro' could also be in the works - a larger, 13-year-inch device that may or may not be convertible to become a laptop.
Apple is reportedly redesigning its iPhone yet again for the launch of the 'iPhone 6.' Reports are that it will include a 4.7-inch screen - considerably larger than the 4-inch iPhone 5S and 5C.
Finally, it is said Apple could be working on its own television line and could launch an offering in 2014, according to Business Insider.

Forget the rumored iPad Pro, what 2014 needs is a better Apple TV

Rumors of a 13-inch iPad Pro were once again making the rounds this week, amped up by talk of a 4K Retina display. I have absolutely no idea whether or not it will ever become a real product, but I’ll happily go on record saying I don’t think 4k resolution makes a lot of sense for a tablet. It’s possible someone might put one out, and it’s definitely possible that there is a market for one, but I don’t think it’s possible for such a product to financially matter to a company like Apple in 2014. Personally, I think Apple could get more bang for the buck if they opened a game store for the Apple TV.

The $99 Apple TV set top box (we have to stop calling it that considering how small it is) is already compelling for YouTube, iTunes, and Netflix access. Add iOS games to the mix and bring forth some bluetooth controllers and I think we’ll see Apple TV volume explode by an order of magnitude.

If we look at comments made by Tim Cook in 2013, they had an installed base of about 13 million Apple TV devices and were on track to sell about 7 million per year. I suspect this pace has already accelerated, and I look forward to Apple reporting an update after the holiday season. So what if they can ramp that up an order of magnitude by making the device way more useful? What if Apple can sell 50 to 100 million units per year? Priced at a hundred bucks, even 100 million units only translates into $10 billion in revenue, which moves the needle very little on a total top line of close to $200 billion.

But I’m much more interested in what Apple can do with that kind of Apple TV volume. Can they leverage their way into content delivery? Can they take on Netflix (or buy them)? Can they roll out new money-grabbing services?

It seems to me the Apple TV is the product with the most potential over the next year, aside from any secret new product categories we don’t know about. It has all the potential of iOS yet, so far, none of the product polish that Apple is really known for. Enhance the remote. Slick-up the user interface. Maybe put a camera in it for video conferencing. Allow iPods, iPhones, and MFi to connect in for multi player games. Sell us access to sporting events where we use our handheld device to pick from multiple camera angles or replays. If you can't work with the cable companies, make them obsolete.

I'm not that creative, and I'm sure Apple has even better ideas then this. But it seems to me, rather than simply making bigger screen iOS devices, making the big screen more useful offers a ton of upside for Apple.
